The Aftermath of Dermal Fillers: What to Expect

After months of contemplation, research, and hearing the first-hand benefits from all your friends, you finally decided to get dermal fillers. So, what happens next? You spent the entire morning full of excitement mixed with anxiety, got your face numbed up and injected with one of the best fillers on the market, then went home on your merry way.

Afterward, perhaps you got a quick peek in the doctor’s office mirror and saw some facial wrinkles already buffed out, or maybe you sat looking in your car mirror for ten minutes trying to find some difference in how your wrinkles and skin folds looked. You may have also noticed some redness and even bruising.

All these reactions are normal, and they ultimately depend on the individual. Below are some common things to expect after receiving an FDA-approved filler, such as Revanesse Versa, Radiesse, Belotero, or Restylane (Contour, Lyft, or Defyne).

Common Things to Expect Post-Treatment

Immediate or Gradual Results

Dermal fillers are soft tissue injectables designed to restore volume to the skin, achieving a more youthful and radiant appearance. Many of these fillers are designed to produce results immediately, however, results can be gradual depending on a variety of factors. FDA-approved fillers including Restylane and Belotero are known to produce immediate results, eliminating the appearance of wrinkles and skin folds.

If you notice that you’re achieving results gradually over the course of days or even weeks, don’t worry as that’s perfectly normal, especially depending on the type of dermal filler that was injected.

Mild Discomfort, Redness, Swelling, and Bruising

A common side effect of receiving a dermal filler injection is experiencing mild pain or discomfort following treatment. Even though the treated area is numbed prior to the injection, it’s normal to feel this discomfort after the anesthetic wears off.

In addition, bruising, swelling, and redness are common reactions as well and typically go away a couple of days to a week after receiving the fillers. If these side effects last longer than a week, then it’s recommended to contact your doctor to see if any treatment is required.

Duration of Results

After being administered a soft-tissue filler, you may be wondering how long the results will last. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever and the results do fade after a period of time. Receiving fillers on a regular basis is the best way to keep the look of restored volume and minimize facial wrinkles.

That being said, filler results can last anywhere from six months to a year, depending on the type of filler you choose, its volume, and your body’s biology. In some cases, FDA-approved Collagen-stimulating fillers, including Radiesse, can last up to two years!

  • There are plenty more effects one can experience following a dermal filler injection that are completely normal. If you’re concerned about the effects you’re experiencing post-treatment, then it’s recommended that you contact your doctor.
